The President of the Port of Huelva receives this international award at the 35th World Congress of the PIANC organisation, held in Cape Town.
The Port of Huelva has been awarded an international prize by the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC), for the management model of its dredging, which in addition to maintaining the necessary draught to guarantee safe navigation, brings environmental benefits to the surroundings.
The award was collected by the president of the Port of Huelva, Alberto Santana, who attended the 35th World Congress of this association, which is taking place in the city of Cape Town (South Africa), between 29st of April and 3rd of May, focused on promoting sustainability in the maritime sector. The highest representative of the Port of Huelva was accompanied by the head of the Sustainability and Energy Transition Department, Rocío López.
After thanking the president of PIANC, Francisco Esteban Lefler, for this international award, Alberto Santana assured that for the Port of Huelva ‘this award is the result of a strategy, which is committed to the coexistence of our port environment and our industrial activity with a protected natural area such as the Marismas del Odiel, a biosphere reserve, an important wetland inhabited by 250 species of birds’. Santana also stressed that the new projects to be launched in the Port of Huelva ‘will position us as the most important energy transition cluster in southern Europe’.
This recognition endorses the innovative project for the recovery of habitats and seabirds carried out by the Port of Huelva through the beneficial use of dredging and bio-tools. The aim of the project is to enhance ecological connectivity in the estuary of the Port of Huelva by means of two actions. On the one hand, through the confinement of dredged materials to create new spaces of high value and prevent them from continuing into the ocean, and on the other hand, the recovery of ecological functions in other places through their removal and subsequent restoration.
