The challenge of making green hydrogen competitive in thermal processes was the main theme of the session.

Green hydrogen is being shown at the national congress in Huelva as the best option for accelerating the decarbonisation process and increasing energy independence in Europe. Its application to sectors such as maritime transport is currently a priority that will help reduce the carbon footprint. However, more research is still needed to make its use profitable in industries that still need fossil fuels, which behave differently from hydrogen in thermal processes, as well as to achieve a more competitive price.

This was the starting point for a new round table discussion at the 1st National Green Hydrogen Congress being held these days in Huelva, which was attended by the CEO of Atlantic Copper, Javier Targhetta, the director of H2V at Iberdrola Spain, Ibán Molina, and the secretary general of the National Association of Ceramic Frits, Glazes and Colours ANFECC, Manuel Breva.

Atlantic Copper belongs to a multinational group that is the world’s leading copper producer and has several smelters, one of them in Huelva, which produces 10% of the copper consumed by Spain each year as a thermal and electrical conductor.

“The challenge we have is the easiest as we only need to see how the liquid metal boils with hydrogen, modify the installation and apply a learning curve, but we are concerned about the production, storage and price of H2V. I don’t see the competitive advantage of hydrogen right now and that worries me. You can’t lose competitiveness,” Targhetta said.
